Google Wants YOU! to Set Your Music Free

Uncle Sam

Last week we told you about the future of journalism emerging from the #hashes (ha!) of seemingly irrelevant tweets. And, in keeping with this new trend of social media integration as a way to distill endless online content, we’d like to turn your attention to the advent of Google’s latest progeny: Music Beta. Let Google help you set your music free!

In two weeks, Google Inc. is going up against iTunes with the oldest marketing trick in the book: word of mouth. According to the Wall Street Journal, Google will soon unveil its own music-downloading store that enables users to recommend and share music with their Google+ contacts for free. The idea is that, by following up on friends’ recommendations (word of mouth), Google will attract and retain potential consumers. The online store also lets users upload music from a source computer to other computers and mobile devices. That’s right, you will only have to buy music once — effectively setting my Madonna collection free (from iTunes’ arguably strict sharing limitations).
