12 Days of Social Media Kick Off: Personal Branding

The First Word Digital Team is looking to give back to the M Booth community, holding morning presentations for the entire agency staff called the 12 Days of Social Media. Each morning’s session offers a 15 minute interactive talk that focuses on different social topics and trends designed to teach something and spark conversation.
For the first day we took it to the agency to think about Social Media as not just an opportunity for clients, but as a must for establishing ourselves as Personal Brands. The discussion was based on the values of creating and maintaining social media in each of our personal lives, breaking it down to the Why, What, How and Where of Personal Branding:
WHY:
- Managing your personal brand is the first step in being a good community manager and social media marketer.
- If for no other reason: You’re searchable! Build a profile that represents you in the best possible light, even if It’s just for your next date.
WHAT:
- The brand of you matters. It is a reflection of you, your clients, your employer and your personality online.
HOW:
- Identify what makes you special : what is your story? What are your goals, where are your boundaries?
- Just like when developing for a brand: what is your goal? Is it to get yourself know, find new information, to keep up with contacts or build new connections?
- Social Media provides the opportunity to define your own audience and it’s all about perceived value.
- The first step is believing it worthwhile.
- Build an audience and think about who you follow as it will greatly inform the information you share and the persona you are creating.
WHERE:
- We don’t know, only you do!
- Pick a network that matches your goals.
- You may find success in smaller networks that allow for more opportunity to be heard.
- Think beyond the obvious and into networks like Quora, Instagram, Slideshare, Pintrest and Google+.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
- Keep it simple
- Call to action: It can work in personal brands too, and lets you see who your peer advocate are
- Always be sharing
- Provide value and stay fresh
- Make yourself easy to contact
Stay tuned for another 12 Days of Social Media tomorrow when we look at the Gift that keeps on Gif-ing
