12 Days of Social Media, Day 10: Getting the Most Out of Twitter
In 2011, Twitter was the most buzzed about social network, so for the 10th Day of Social Media, we took a look at some of the ways using Twitter can add value to your own personal brand. Here are some tips from Josh Rosenberg, Senior Vice President/Director of our FirstWord Digital team:
- Use Twitter as a listening tool – If you’re new to Twitter, the best place to start is to listen. Follow influential people who talk about the topics you are interested in and look at the kind of content they post. Use this as a model for your first Tweets.
- Know your audience – Once you begin Tweeting and building your following, be sure to keep an eye on who is following you so you can ensure that your Tweets are relevant. One of the quickest ways to lose followers is to Tweet content that is not of interest to them.
- Post valuable content – This goes along with knowing your audience. Once you figure out who you are speaking to, tailor your content and conversation style to them. Do you work for a mom-friendly brand? Try following some influential moms who blog and posting some client news (with disclosure). Is your following tech savvy? They’ll likely appreciate links to the latest tech news.
- Find influencers – If you are looking to connect with the thought leaders in your area of interest or even searching for a spokesperson for a client project, Twitter is a great place to start. Because Tweets are quick and easy to post, people are more apt to share their interests via quick posts about what they’re doing that day. Eventually, you can see a pattern in their interests, and identify people who are influential in these topics. You can also get a sense of the person’s personality, as it’s hard to be too formal in 140 characters. Ignore Twitter during your search for a spokesperson, and you may never find the bar tender who’s an expert at mixing cocktails with your spirit client’s product and has the perfect personality for media tours.
- Make connections – One of the biggest benefits to Twitter over other social networks is that you can get direct access to celebrities, media, business leaders and other influencers that you would not ordinarily have. If you meet someone at an event, it’s a great way to stay in touch and be aware of what you are both working on without having to email each other for updates. Each year, new business ventures are started through relationships that began on Twitter.
Tell us – what value have you gotten from using Twitter?
