In the best news story of the week, everyone’s favorite basketball player/actor/rapper/cop, Shaquille O’Neal, is now on Twitter! Shaq was getting fed up with an impostor posing as him on Twitter, so he decided to sign himself up.
The_Real_Shaq, whose bio is simply “VERY QUOTATIOUS,” features tweets like, “ABOUT TO EAT DINNER, I PASSED UP 20 MCDONALDS TODAY. I COULDNT DO IT I’M ON A DIET,BUT MCDONALDS FRIES R THE BEST UM UM UM” and “On my way to practice, running late and i got stop by the cops, aaaaaaaggh.”
Don’t worry, he probably didn’t get a ticket, because Shaq actually is a cop (yes, a real one). He’s also my hero.

"Gotta love them 'Smores'”

Want to be that much closer to Barack Obama or Kevin Rose status on Twitter?
Read supercool entrepreneur Guy Kawasaki’s blog post on how to get more people to follow your tweets on Twitter.
Topping his tip list is the idea of following “smores”:
Tip 1: Follow the “smores.” They are the folks with large number of followers and seem to be the opinion leaders (and perhaps even “heroes”) of Twitter.
Numero tres talks about your all-important visage:
Tip 3: Create an effective avatar. Your avatar is a window into your soul, so you need to create one that doesn’t look like you shot it with a camera phone while you were drunk. In most cases, use a simple, informal straight-up photo of just your face—not you and your dog, car, kids, or surfboard. Increase the exposure to brighter than you think it should be.
Way down at number six is another helpful tip on establishing yourself as an expert:
Tip 6: Establish yourself as a subject expert. One thing is for sure about Twitter: there are some people interested in every subject and every side of every subject. By establishing yourself as a subject expert, you will make yourself interesting to some subset of people.
Now go and give President-elect Obama a run for his money.

Dunkin' Donuts offers America fresh, hot Tweets

Dunkin’ Donuts is the latest brand to get its Twitter on, and it seems to have a good game plan. Dunkin’ will provide special offers to fans, but that isn’t the central goal of their presence on Twitter. Manager of Interactive Marketing David Tryder said, “We hope the primary reward will be opening up the doors to Dunkin’ Donuts and providing a means for fans of the brand to connect and have a dialogue about or with the brand.” DD may be arriving late to Twitter since Starbucks arrived a little while ago, but if they’re serious about creating meaningful engagement, they will be just fine. It’s not about the quantity of followers, it’s about the quality of their conversations. Kudos to Dunkin’ Donuts!

Tips for companies using real-time communication strategies

PRWeek published a great article on using real-time outlets like Twitter to connect with consumers. They also shared some interesting tips that would help clients wanting to vocalize in the space.
- Even though Twitter is a low-cost investment, companies must ensure they have the resources to support the effort. This includes frequent updates and the capacity to quickly respond.
- Consumers have become skeptical of companies joining the social media conversation simply as a PR move. To be effective on sites like Twitter, companies should provide value for customers by answering questions about the brand or providing technical information
- Because there is no barrier to entry on Twitter, some companies have been “brandjacked” on Twitter. It’s best to set some branding guidelines so that users can identify the company’s official Twitter feeds.
- For most tech companies, at least a part of their audience will be on social networks like Twitter. But they should be prepared for some users to prefer not to be contacted through social media.

Our buddy Jon Steinberg, the developer of Twittertise, explains Twitter’s value as an instant newswire. He also gave a great demonstration of this in person to all the M Boothers who attended Wednesday’s presentation.

When discussing Twitter and Twittertise, I typically launch into the concept of the “real-time web.” I then use the following hypothetical example:
Imagine a new iPhone launches and you wait on line for it. You get home and tear it out of its box only to discover some odd flaw. Let’s say, for the purposes of this hypothetical example, that receiving an SMS while watching video cause the device to crash. You search the web and various blog search engines only to find no references to this issue; after all, it’s only been 30 minutes since the device launched. Is it just your iPhone? Does anyone else have this issue?
The you head to search.twitter.com, and you search for “iphone SMS video” and find 45 tweets complaining about this issue. You relax. A patch will no doubt be issued. Your device is not individually deffective. You do not need to go back to the Apple Store.
And now for a real example happening NOW (10/31/08 - 12:30pm EST). When I log onto chase.com, I get an error message - the site is down. Am I the only one? The web would have me thinking so. There are no references. But head over here.
We never realized how stale the morning papers were before cable news and the web. We never knew how stale the web was before Twitter.

The Wall Street Journal’s weekend edition covered the growing popularity of Twitter. The article outlines the basics of Twitter and lists some of the classic examples of companies using Twitter successfully (Zappos and Comcast). It was mostly an overview of what most professionals in our field already know; however, it did offer some interesting numbers demonstrating Twitter’s accelerating growth.
